A cruise is almost certainly guaranteed to be a wonderful and relaxing holiday option, and whilst the basic rules like being respectful towards crew members and other passengers are rather obvious, there are some elements of cruise etiquette that you may not be aware of. These are some of the things you really should know before embarkation.
1. Treat all members of the crew with respect
We have already mentioned this one, but it is so important to be polite and kind towards the members of the crew. After all, if something goes wrong, they are the ones you will be turning to for help.
2. Wait your turn for the elevator
There are thousands of passengers on a cruise ship and not that many elevators. Let those with mobility issues into the elevators first, and if you can, take the stairs. If you can’t, then be patient.
3. Remember the dress code
Your cruise line will have suggestions of appropriate attire for different events that they will issue before you sail. It’s a good idea to use this as a guide. Whilst there is some flexibility, there are also some definite no-nos when it comes to onboard attire.
4. Be cautious when carrying food and beverages around the ship
Be careful carrying food and beverages around. Avoid bumping into people and spilling things.
5. Don’t use the same plate when returning to the buffet
Using the same plate when you return to the buffet can spread germs and is frowned upon. Leave your dirty plate on the table and it will be removed for you.
6. Check the list of prohibited items
Before you set sail, make sure that you are not packing anything that is prohibited by the cruise line, as it could be confiscated.
7. Wash your hands
Frequent washing of hands, particularly before entering the buffet is highly recommended, to avoid the spread of germs onboard.
8. Attend the muster drill
Do not skip the muster drill. It is important. Skipping once will result in a second chance to hear the safety briefing, but skipping a second time risks you being removed at the next port.
9. Keep your reservations
If you make reservations, don’t be late and don’t forget about them.
10. Don’t be a chair hog
Do not “reserve” chairs you may use later. Most cruise lines remove items from chairs and sun loungers and leave a note letting you know where to collect your items.
11. No smoking in non-designated areas
There are designated smoking, and vaping areas, onboard – use them.
12. Be polite to other passengers
If you get into a situation where tensions rise with another passenger, seek a member of the crew to help resolve things.
13. Understand the gratuity system
These are an additional fee, sometimes not included in the fare for your cruise. You can pay them in advance or add them to your onboard account. It is frowned upon to remove them.
14. Consider your noise levels
Be considerate of others when walking in the corridors, closing doors or playing music in your stateroom – other passengers may be sleeping.
15. Do not throw things overboard
Doing this can disturb the delicate ecosystem. There are plenty of bins on board the ship, and you should use these. If you don’t, you’ll risk a fine.
16. Listen to onboard announcements
Onboard announcements will alert you to a range of important information so make sure that you listen to them.
17. Supervise your children
Everyone on the cruise ship is there to have a pleasant holiday. This means they don’t want to be disturbed by children, you should make sure minors are supervised at all times.
18. Do not leave a mess in your cabin
Your cabin attendant is not there to tidy up after you. Be respectful and leave your cabin in a tidy state so they can make the bed, refresh your towels, and do the other things that are part of their job.
19. Your drinks package is only for you
Do not share your drinks package with others. Otherwise, it may be revoked, and you will not get a refund.
20. Understand your alcohol limits
Finally, a drinks package offers either unlimited drinks or a set amount per day. This does not mean you need to drink them all. It is important to know your limit and when to stop.
Knowing all these rules will ensure you don’t cause issues to other passengers, and that you have a safe, fun time on your cruise.
