The Basic Guide to Unwritten Cruise Ship Rules

On every expedition to the sea, there will be some official cruise ship rules, such as not running by the pool or not jumping overboard whenever you feel like it. However, it’s also important to consider the unspoken rules that people on cruises tend to abide by (or not, to other passengers’ chagrin). These are the kinds of things that you might not know on your first cruise, however, those that have been onboard a few times generally just get it.

In this blog, we’re going to give you a whistle-stop tour of cruise ship etiquette, so whether you need an update after a hiatus or you’re just about to get your sea legs, you can feel confident as a valued passenger on any vessel.

Respect the balcony

Having a balcony is a real treat if your quarters comes with one, however, there are some basic unwritten rules concerning how that space should be treated.

  • Don’t be loud on it (music or shouting)
  • No peeking into your neighbour’s space
  • No slamming doors
  • Don’t leave things out to blow into the sea (also a fire hazard)

Phone etiquette

On average, we spend 4 hours 37 minutes on our phones a day – make sure any you spend on a cruise are respectful to your fellow travellers.

  • Don’t take long calls in public
  • NEVER use speakerphone in public
  • Obviously, don’t use your phone at shows or similar onboard events
  • Don’t constantly ask for the WiFi

The rules of the pool

You’d think that most people had been to pools before, however, there are a surprising number of passengers who lose their pool sensibilities on deck.

  • Always wear flip-flops or sandals if you’re not swimming – safer and more hygienic
  • Don’t hog the hot tub
  • Don’t spend too long on one lounger

Control your children

You want your kids to have fun on what’s likely their first cruise, however, this can’t be at the expense of other passengers on the vessel.

  • Supervise them in general (you know how they should be behaving)
  • Don’t let them run around the dining area
  • Be on time to pick them up from children’s activities

General cruise ship rules to avoid looking foolish

Alongside the hyper-specific cruise rules, there are plenty of rules that people should keep in mind wherever they might be on a cruise.

  • Don’t bring up religion or politics with strangers
  • Say “hi” but don’t bother people
  • Don’t complain about things all the time
  • Don’t brag about suite, points or loyalty status
  • Don’t discuss money
  • Always tip when possible
  • All-you-can-eat/drink are NOT Challenges
  • Gather a basic understanding of maritime lingo
